Know your customer
understanding the British online shopper
Did you know? British consumers are more prone to shopping via social media than the rest of Europe. Additionally, the British are also mostly active on online marketplaces, with Amazon being the most popular one by far (99 %). And when it comes to receiving their packages, they prefer home deliveries.
Good to know: 51 % of British consumers exclusively shop when sellers offer free shipping. We advise sellers to calculate the transport rates into their selling price. What about returns? Most Britons expect an already printed return label with their package, and 45% get turned off by return fees.

In that case, British consumers pay VAT and import duties.
Is the package value less than GBP 135?
Then you, as the sender, have to file the VAT return. To do so, you’ll need a British VAT number and an EORI number.
Shipments to companies
Depending on the Incoterms you agreed on, either you or the UK customer will pay import duties and VAT.
Incoterm DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means that you will pay the VAT and import duties. In this case, you will need a UK VAT number.

Questions about shipping packages to the UK?
Take a look at the FAQs below.
How do I calculate the shipping costs for my international shipment?
The shipping costs for international packages or pallets depend on various factors such as weight, dimensions, destination, frequency of shipments, etc. Based on these factors, we always calculate a customized rate. Request your personal quote now.
Why do I need dimensions to calculate my shipping rate?
Your shipment will be weighed in two ways: the actual weight in kilograms and the volumetric weight, which is calculated based on the dimensions of your package (L x W x H in cm / 4,000).
The higher of the two determines the rate for your shipment. For shipping a large box of feathers, we look at the volumetric weight. A small box of bolts and nuts? Then we take the actual weight in kilograms.
Are there any additional costs to the shipping rate, such as import duties and VAT?
That depends on the terms of trade or incoterms agreed upon between you as the seller and the buyer abroad. Read more about the agreements in international trade and incoterms.
Can I also import a shipment from abroad via DHL eCommerce?
Importing a shipment is only possible within the Benelux. From other European countries, you can receive returns from consumers, but not actual import shipments.
What goods am I not allowed to ship with DHL?
You can send many things, but not everything. For safety reasons, we do not ship dangerous substances, products of extremely high value, fertilizers, etc. Check the full list of prohibited goods.
Can I insure my shipment?
We handle every shipment with the utmost care. At the same time, we understand that your valuable packages require extra assurance. You can easily take out transport insurance with DHL eCommerce at an attractive premium. Read all about it.
